Safety Talk

Prepare Your Safety Talk
Do not Panic!
So you have asked to give a Safety Talk!
First tip - DON'T PANIC!

Preparation
If you are asked to give a Safety Talk, the worst thing you can do is arrive without any preparation.
As a guideline, if you know your subject, and are starting from scratch you really should allow at least an hour to prepare a 5-minute Safety Talk.
If you do not really know your subject, you should allow a lot longer to do the research necessary.
Find out how the subject of your safety talk affects your organization or the group of people that you will be present. Tailor your presentation to meet the needs of your audience.

Venue
The venue for your safety talk may be dictated to you. It may be an existing meeting room, site office or other suitable location.
Make sure any equipment or props you need are going to be available. If you need an overhead projector to show a PowerPoint presentation, is there one available? Is there room to demonstrate putting on a Safety Harness?
Check the location before you start your preparation, it may determine the type of presentation you deliver.

When
Decide on the best time to have the safety talk, once again this may be determined for you. A good time is a the start of a shift, or at the start of a meeting.
Avoid having a safety talk at the end of a meeting or at the end of a shift. You will find people are not interested and just want to get away.

How Long
Safety Talks should keep short and to the point. The aim is to get the message across efficiently and quickly in a way that will understand and remembered.
A Safety Talk is not a training course. Think of it as a memory jogger, a quick bit of advice, or a short discussion session.
Ideally a Safety Talk need only be about 5 minutes long, certainly it should not be longer than 10 minutes.

What Topic?
Choose a single topic, there are some ideas below. Pick something that is relevant to the people you will be presenting to, or the work that they are performing.Keep It Short, Simple (remember KISS), allow discussion on the topic but maintain control. If you need to you can review the discussion topics in another Safety Talk.

Examples
Examples can be great, especially if they are specific to the work force been addressed, or the tasks had been performed. Props, items of PPE, Video Clips, and Photographs and so on can all add value and interest to your Safety Talk.

Any Question

Questions
As already mentioned you can allow questions to be asked, and you should encourage this. It is up to you whether you answer questions as you go or ask for questions to be kept until the end. A good discussion group can turn a Safety Talk in to a valuable session for all attending.

Attendance Records
Keep a record of those attending the Safety Talk. Most companies use these to demonstrate a level of commitment to safety.
You can use these records for a number of things. A check can be made to ensure that the target audience is being captured, or are there some individuals, shifts, or contractors that have been missed.
If you are required to provide evidence of Safety training, attendance records for Safety Talks can form a part of this evidence.

Archive
When you have completed your Safety Talk you should archive it. It can then be used again in the future as a refresher or for new personnel.
If using an archived Safety Talk be sure to check the validity of the information.
Check that legislation or local rules have not changed. Check that the work tasks are similar and that the information being conveyed is relevant.

Make notes each time you give the Safety Talk detailing questions asked, areas that need further explanation and props used.

Health and Safety Training Important

Why is health and safety training important?

Over 200 people are killed each year in accidents at work and over one million people are injured. Over two million suffer illnesses caused by, or made worse by, their work.
Routine work can dull alertness and a relaxed attitude can replace the caution that existed when the job was new and interesting. In many jobs the same route is traveled daily over the same roads or the same tasks are repeated with little conscious thought. Without some periodic reawakening to the ever-present hazards, lethargy deepens and the odds of an accident occurring can increase.

Workers may not always recognize the importance of safety training or think of it as unnecessary because they’ve "been doing it for years." But an important benefit of periodic safety training is the reminder that a danger can exist and the no one is immune to accidents. Therefore, it is important for workers to understand the purpose of the training session, why it will be useful to them, and what can result from not following safety rules and procedures.
The safety training should be organized so that the order in which the material is presented will match the steps that should be taken on the job. Make sure every worker understands the training material; not just that they were present or a test was given. Insist on questions from trainees after a session to tell you what did or did not sink in. This will let you know what has to be reviewed again. If there is a general lack of understanding of hazards or safety rules and practices, schedule another safety meeting or plan a refresher course for a later date.

Employees should be able to immediately practice and apply new knowledge and skills. If workers don’t understand safety training information well enough to use it on the job, the training has not been effective. There should be immediate feedback if workers are doing their job safely or not. Supervisors should watch employees do their jobs and question them, to identify what they do, or don’t, know.
Most of these tips are relatively simple and inexpensive solutions, but the safety payoff can be enormous. Remember, training is only effective when workers understand, and use, what they have learned. It takes less than a second to lose the rest of your life.
Providing health & safety information and training helps you to:
·         Ensure you or your employees are not injured or made ill by the work they do;
·         Develop a positive health & safety culture, where safe & healthy working becomes second nature to everyone;
·         Find out how you could manage health and safety better;
·         Meet your legal duty to protect the health & safety of your employees.
Effective training:
·         Will contribute towards making your employees competent in health & safety;
·         Can help your business avoid the distress that accidents and ill health cause;
·         Can help you avoid the financial costs of accidents & occupational ill health.
Do not forget that your insurance does not cover all losses. Damaged products, lost production and de-motivated staff can all result.

The law requires that you provide whatever information, instruction and training is needed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health & safety of your employees.

What is training?
Training means helping people to learn how to do something, telling people what they should or (often as important) should not do, or simply giving them information. Training is not just about formal ‘classroom’ courses and obtaining ‘tickets’ (certificates) to work.
Company Culture
When employees join a new workplace, they should be given an immediate sense that the company places a high priority on safety. This should be ingrained into the culture as a whole. One way to do this is to have everyone, from low-wage workers to senior executives, show public support for and knowledge of safety programs. Employees should also learn about safety training through detailed policies and procedures laid out by the company.
Safety Training Includes Studying Incidents
Safety-oriented organizations learn from accidents and illnesses that affect workers' health. They study each incident, then make any necessary changes to policies and procedures to prevent similar accidents or illnesses in the future. Part of this process falls to the head safety officer. He oversees the collection of incident data and reviews it with the assistance of an interdisciplinary team. Executive leaders delegate the development of better safety training to explain revised policies and procedures to managers. These managers ensure that updated safety training programs clearly explain changes to policies and procedures to affected workers.
Safety Training Fits a Dynamic Organization
Employees need safety training whenever their job changes in a substantial way. This is especially true when an employee is exposed to increased risk, such as when she takes a new position, gets a change in duties, gets introduced to new equipment or changes in how equipment is used, and is introduced to new technology. New safety training should also be implemented when the employee works with more at-risk workers or needs to satisfy the employer's insurance provider.
Safety Training Responds to Identified Risks
Executives and safety officers must lead the way when it comes to safety procedures. They should recommend new or improved safety training to prevent workplace accidents and illnesses. They can do this by keeping lines of communication open among workers throughout the firm, including how safety data is shared between workers and management. Executives and safety officers need input from all employees to identify risks facing the organization and then use a team approach to develop methods of minimizing or preventing risks.

When workplace safety is a high company priority, and the workers are properly trained, they feel more comfortable and confident on the job. There are fewer accidents. Productivity is increased, costs are diminished, and profit margins follow suit.

Benefits & Uses of Garlic:

Ayurveda Medicinal Use & Benefits of Garlic
For generation, people are not only using garlic because of its medicinal value, but traditionally, people have rubbed their bodies with it, buried it besides their bodies in coffin, worn it around their necks, draped it on household walls and even prayed to it. This great bulb has many benefits, because no other plant has held out for so long as a cure for so many human ailments. That is why garlic has considered as the "Wonder Drug". Garlic has used medicinally for many years for treating bites, tumors, ulcers, snakebite, wounds, headaches, heart diseases, cancer, pimples, measles and many more. It also prevents infections such as the common cold, cough because of its Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal and Anti-viral property.

Garlic is used in every Indian kitchen exception is religion purposes few people do not use it. Garlic arranged in a head, called a "bulb," which averages about 2 inches in height and diameter and consists of numerous small separate cloves.
Both the cloves and the entire bulb are encased in paper-like sheathes that can be white, off-white, or have a pink/purple hue. In general, it exhibits antioxidant activity, which is good for your skin. It also contains flavonoids, which is good for heart and body.
Garlic contains a range of compounds including "Allicin", which is a pungent oily liquid that gives crushed garlic cloves their characteristic smell, and has been shown to be the antibacterial agent due to its active sulphur.

As this proverb is very common that - "An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away". In the same manner, - "A single bulb of Garlic a day, keep diseases away".

Chemical Composition and Uses of Garlic –
Steamed distillation of crushed fresh bulbs yields 0.1-3.6% of a volatile oil Some sulfur-containing compounds that make up this oil are thought to be responsible for most of garlic's pharmacological properties.
1.      Allicin - Natural antibiotic - fights bacteria, mainly responsible for pungent odor. When garlic cells are "injured," (i.e. cut, crushed, etc.) the enzyme alliinase converts alliin contained in raw garlic to allicin – the garlic produces allicin to protect itself from bacteria & other disease-causing organisms.
2.      Allicinase - Inactivated by heat – cooked garlic does not have as strong an odor as raw garlic (nor nearly as powerful physiological effects)
3.      Ajoene - Decreases blood cell clumping
4.      Selenium - Antioxidant contained in high quantities in garlic. Antioxidants fight oxidation & free radicals inside the body that wear out the body & may lead to cancer
5.      Saponins - Lowers blood pressure,  helps to control reduce chances of heart attack or stroke
6.      Fructans - stimulate the immune system

Note:-Do not consume more than three to four raw cloves of garlic a day. When Garlic eaten excessively, it can leave a distinct odor on the skin and breathe; can cause heartburn, upset stomach and allergic reactions. It is best to avoid garlic before any surgery because it could probably disturb Anticoagulants.

The active component in garlic is the sulfur compound called allicin. Allicin is the chemical produced when garlic is chopped, chewed, or bruised. Allicin is powerful as an antibiotic and a potent agent that helps the body to inhibit the ability of germs to grow and reproduce. In fact, it say that 1 milligram of allicin has a potency of 15 standard units of penicillin.
Allicin known to have wonderful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties

Garlic Benefits / Uses of Garlic:
Garlic Act as Antibacterial and Antiviral
Garlic is most well-known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties. They help control bacterial, viral, fungal, yeast and worm infections. Fresh garlic is thought to play a role in preventing food poisoning by killing bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella enteritidis, etc.
Garlic is good for heart (Protect heart)
Garlic protects our heart against cardiovascular problems like heart attacks and atherosclerosis. This cardio-protective property can attribute to various factors. With age, the arteries tend to lose their ability to stretch. Garlic may help reduce this and may protect the heart from the damaging effects of free oxygen radicals. The sulphur-containing compounds of garlic also prevent our blood vessels from becoming blocked and slow the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The anti-clotting properties of ajoene help prevent clots from forming inside the blood vessels.
Daily Eating 2 or 3 garlic cloves helps to keep away Heart Attack. Garlic's vitamin B6 helps prevent heart disease via another mechanism: lowering levels of homocysteine.
Garlic helps to reduce cholesterol (Reduce cholesterol)
Garlic has the ability to moderately lower our blood triglycerides and total cholesterol and reduce arterial plaque formation. The antioxidant properties of garlic help scavenge harmful free radicals, which can damage LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood stream.

Garlic helps maintain blood circulation (Reduce blood pressure)
Garlic helps to regulate the body's blood pressure. Therefore, whether you have problems with low or high blood pressure, garlic can help to normalize it. Angiotensin II is a protein that helps our blood vessels contract thereby increasing the blood pressure. Allicin in garlic blocks the activity of angiotensin II and helps in reducing blood pressure. The polysulphides present in garlic are converted into a gas called hydrogen sulphide by the red blood cells. Hydrogen sulphide dilates our blood vessels and helps control blood pressure.
Garlic use for respiratory problems
Daily use of garlic might reduce the frequency and number of colds. Its antibacterial properties help in treating throat irritations. Garlic may also reduce the severity of upper respiratory tract infections. Its benefits in disorders of the lungs like asthma, difficulty of breathing, etc. make it a priceless medicine.  Its ability to promote expectoration makes it irreplaceable in chronic bronchitis.
Garlic helps regulate your blood sugar levels (Diabetes)
Garlic considered regulating blood sugar levels by increasing the release of insulin in diabetics.
Garlic used as Blood thinning
The anti-clotting properties of ajoene found in garlic help in preventing the formation of blood clots in the body. Hence, it may also increase the risk of bleeding after surgery.
Garlic helps to control weight; Garlic helps in weight loss (Reduce weight)
Many researchers believe that obesity is a state of long-term low-grade inflammation. According to recent research, garlic may help to regulate the formation of fat cells in our body. Pre-adipocytes are converting into fat cells (adipocytes) through inflammatory system activity. The anti-inflammatory property of 1, 2-DT (1, 2-vinyldithiin) found in garlic may help inhibit this conversion. This may help prevent weight gain. If you are very fat and want to lose weight, squeeze half lemon juice in one glass of luke warm water and drink it with two cloves of raw garlic regularly twice a day (morning and evening), for about six  months.

Garlic helps to control Cancer (Natural Chemotherapy)
Garlic has germanium in it. Germanium is an anti-cancer agent, and garlic has more of it than any other herb. Daily intake of garlic has found to lower risk of most types of cancer. This anti-cancer property is due to allyl sulphides found in garlic. PhIP, a type of heterocyclic amine (HCA), has been associated with increased incidence of breast cancer among women. According to studies, diallyl sulphide found in garlic inhibits the transformation of PhIP into carcinogens. Garlic's ajoene and allicin have also been shown to retard cancer cells as a type of natural chemotherapy.
Use garlic as Combat allergies (Itching)
Garlic knows to have anti-inflammatory property. It can help the body fight against allergies. The anti-arthritic property of garlic is due to diallyl sulphide and thiacremonone.  Garlic has been show to improve allergic airway inflammation (allergic rhinitis). Raw garlic juice may used to stop immediately the itching due to rashes and bug bites.
Garlic use to treat skin infections
The chemical Ajoene found in garlic may help treat fungal skin infections like ringworm and athlete’s foot.
Garlic can be used for Throat Pain Infection
Eat few garlic cloves to reduce the throat pain. Put a small slice of garlic in your mouth and suck on it for 10-15 minutes. Juice slides down your throat and reduces the pain.
Garlic Improves iron metabolism
Ferroportin is a protein, which helps in iron absorption and release. Diallyl sulphides in garlic increase production of ferroportin and help improve iron metabolism.
Garlic can be used for Ear Pain or Infection
Wrap a small piece of garlic in some tissue, and insert it into the ear. Leave it there for few hours   if possible.  Pain almost immediately removed and the infection tends to start clearing up overnight. Be Careful whenever you put something inside ear or even oil.

Garlic used for Toothache
Cut raw garlic, rub the cut edge on the tooth, and gums a couple of times a day to stop toothache.
put some garlic oil or a piece of crushed garlic clove directly onto the affected tooth and the gum for instant relief due to its antibacterial and analgesic properties. But be aware that it can be irritating to the gum.
Garlic is Effective against warts and corns
Applying fat dissolving garlic extracts to corns on the feet and warts on the hands is thought to improve these conditions.
Blood Pressure and Garlic How works?
Garlic is rich in sulfur-containing molecules called polysulfides.
Polysulfides, once inside our red blood cells (RBCs), can further converted by our RBCs into a gas called hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
H2S helps control our blood pressure by triggering dilation of our blood vessels.
When the space inside our blood vessels expands, our blood pressure gets reduced.
(H2S described as a "gaso transmitter" and placed in the same category as nitric oxide (NO) as a messaging molecule that can help expand and relax our blood vessel walls.)
Interestingly, our RBCs do not appear to use processed garlic extracts in the same way that they use polysulfides in food-form garlic
